Students who lose months to an examination failure are often told to remain patient. When they gather to demand answers, they are told to remain quiet. When the gathering becomes impossible to ignore, discussion suddenly shifts from the failure that brought them there to whether their anger looked sufficiently polite.
That pattern is why the images from Jantar Mantar have affected people far beyond NEET candidates. The basic student demand is not unreasonable: if a national examination is disrupted badly enough to require a re-examination, the responsible institutions should provide a transparent account and a meaningful remedy.
The position of this article
Students deserved a safe hearing and a direct institutional response. Any allegation that police used excessive force must be examined independently, using complete video, medical records, operational orders and testimony from both protesters and officers.
This position does not require pretending that route restrictions did not exist. Delhi Police said no permission was granted for the march toward Parliament and cited prohibitory orders. But the existence of an order does not make every subsequent use of force proportionate. Regulation and accountability are not opposites.
What is verified and what remains contested
Several facts are documented. A sustained protest occurred at Jantar Mantar. Police publicly opposed the Parliament march. Videos showed physical confrontation and people being removed. Hundreds of lawyers later condemned the alleged violence. The Delhi High Court sought a police response and directed preservation of relevant video material, according to the reported hearing.
Important questions remain unresolved: which groups crossed which barricades, what instructions officers received, how force escalated at each location and whether individual actions were lawful. A responsible pro-student account should say this plainly. Accuracy protects students because false additions give institutions an excuse to dismiss genuine evidence.
Why “just follow the rules” is incomplete
Peaceful assembly is a constitutional right under Article 19(1)(b), subject to reasonable restrictions. In practice, a protest can be permitted at one location while a march along a particular route is prohibited. That distinction matters legally, but it does not erase the political question: did authorities provide a realistic way for students’ representatives to be heard?
When the only visible response to a long-running grievance is more barricades, institutions teach young people that attention arrives only after escalation. A healthier system offers a named official, a written meeting record, deadlines for answers and publication of the resulting action.
The burden students were already carrying
The NTA record itself shows an original NEET-UG examination, a later re-examination, refund procedures and new security measures. Behind those administrative words are additional travel bookings, missed work for parents, coaching schedules rearranged and weeks of uncertainty.
Public timelines also describe a hunger strike of roughly 20 days before Wangchuk was hospitalized. Whatever a reader thinks of the movement’s leadership, allowing a grievance to reach that physical extreme without a durable public resolution is evidence of a failed channel between students and institutions.
Consider a candidate who travels with one parent. Even without coaching costs, a repeat journey can mean train fares, local transport, meals and accommodation. The bigger loss is concentration: preparation cannot simply be paused and restarted like a download. Students were not arriving at Jantar Mantar with an abstract political complaint. Many were carrying the cost of a system they could not control.
How public support should work
Supporting students means more than sharing the most upsetting clip. Useful support includes:
- Preserve original videos with time and location information.
- Do not expose minors or identifiable protesters without consent.
- Link demands and official notices, not only slogans.
- Correct false claims even when they appear to support your side.
- Help with verified legal, medical and logistical needs.
- Keep the discussion centered on examination accountability.
The most powerful student-centered story is a documented one. It can show harm without treating pain as content.
What accountability would look like
For the police response, accountability means an evidence-preserving inquiry with findings the public can read. For the examination dispute, it means a full incident timeline, candidate compensation rules, independent security audits and consequences that reach decision-makers rather than only low-level contractors.
Students should not have to choose between accepting silence and risking injury to obtain an answer. A democracy should be judged partly by how it receives young people who arrive with a grievance and no institutional power.
